Kirishima Sencha Zairai | Pesticide-free and artificial fertiliser-free | 2026

霧島 煎茶 在来

Sencha from Kagoshima is known for often being shaded before harvest and highly umami-focused – a style that is also reflected in the region’s widespread use of modern cultivars and long fukamushi steaming times.
This unshaded, medium-steamed (futsūmushi) sencha from Kirishima, harvested from +80 years old zairai tea trees, is as such rather unusual; and yet these fine spring leaves present a very smooth and sweet green tea, deeply rooted in its Kagoshima origins.
Grown and produced by the Utoguchi family who have cultivated their tea fields in the mountains of Kirishima without any use of pesticides or artificial fertilisers for decades, creating natural styles of Japanese tea that feel at once humble and profound.
