Join us for an intimate and practice-based kintsugi workshop with kintsugi artist Marina Kawata in io.

Starting September 10th, the workshop takes nine weeks to complete, consisting of a total of five classes held every other week.

Each participant should bring a single, small broken ceramic item to be repaired during classes, such as a teacup or small bowl (please see guidelines below).

After completing the workshop, the participant will know how to repair ceramics using traditional kintsugi techinques, based on natural urushi lacquer and pure keshifun gold or silver powder.

The workshop takes place in the teahouse in Blågårdsgade, with complimentary seasonal teas from io being served during classes.

The workshop is limited to a maximum of five participants. We kindly ask all participants to carefully read the information below before purchasing a ticket.

Please note that the workshop will be conducted in English and that tickets are non-refundable. Following your purchase, an order confirmation will be automatically sent by email and serve as your ticket for the workshop.

Description

Program for the kintsugi workshop

10th September 17:30-20:30 | Thursday

– Introduction to kintsugi and urushi (History/Materials/Safety)
– Broken edges are filed and surrounding area is taped off
– Surfaces are painted and primed with raw lacquer

24th September 17:30-20:30 | Thursday

– Pieces are attached together with mugi-urushi
– Missing parts are filled in with kokuso-urushi

8th October 17:30-20:30 | Thursday

– Areas are smoothed down to the desired shape
– Surfaces are applied with a finer finish, known as sabi-urushi

22nd October 17:30-20:30 | Thursday

– Sabi-urushi is smoothed down with charcoal
– A coating of roiro-urushi is applied to seal the area

5th November 17:30-20:30 | Thursday

– The surface is smoothed down with charcoal
– The area is painted with bengara-urushi
– Pure gold or silver keshifun powder is applied to the painted area (participants are free to choose which kind of keshifun powder they prefer)

As each process leads to the next, it is necessary to attend all classes. If it is impossible to attend a class in person, Marina will take care of your piece with a surcharge of 300 DKK per unattended class.

Item guideline

As time and materials are limited, please follow the guideline below when choosing the single ceramic item you would like to repair during the workshop:

– Diameter: less than 15 cm diameter (exceptions may apply)
– Height: less than 8 cm
– Broken into 4 pieces or fewer
– Missing chips should fit within one cm²
– Small enough to fit comfortably in one hand

About Marina Kawata | 川田まりなについて

Marina first encountered the art of Kintsugi while living in Japan, and she has been working with this traditional craft since 2023. Today, she teaches workshops in Sweden and Denmark and repairs ceramics for private clients using natural, food-safe materials while honouring traditional Kintsugi methods.
