About Saori Yamazaki | 山崎さおりについて

Saori Yamazaki, Hideaki Numano

In her studio located a bit outside of Kasama town in Ibaraki prefecture, Saori Yamazaki specializes in making artisanal teaware.

Each piece is made fully by hand, thrown from Saori-san’s own unique clay body which she blends herself from iron-rich Shigaraki clay. Combined with her distinct carbonized firing technique, the high iron content of the clay of which Shigaraki is famous, helps smoothening the taste of the tea.

While a dedicated potter of teaware, Saori-san is also a passionate tea drinker, and every sip of tea seems infused into her ceramic practice.

All alike yet never the same, it is as if Saori-san’s works embody the fleeting spirit of ichi-go-ichi-e; where continuous variations in shapes and glazes give birth to ever-new forms of expression, testifying to a deep sense of creativity that imbues each piece and which, alongside their impeccable functionality, makes them a real joy to use in one’s daily life.
