About Hikaru Nakada | 光中田について

”Sencha culture flourished in the middle of the Edo period. There was a succession of potters who responded to the demand. The tea utensils they created, which combines the admiration for foreign cultures with the aesthetic sensibilities of Japan, is outstanding in history. My work has been named “Mouhou Chaki”, which means re-creation with respect and admiration for that period. Enjoy a cup of tea.”

Based in Tochigi prefecture, ceramic artist Hikaru Nakada specializes in teaware with a deep sense of connection to history.

Nakada’s work displays a rare multitude of forms and materials, often applying carefully recreated glazes, molding techniques, and other traditional methods inspired by the great teaware potters of the Edo period.

In this way, Nakada’s body of work can be seen as a kind of practical archeology, reconnecting us with the artisanal roots of early sencha culture. Not only in matter, but also in spirit: from a time and a tea culture that, like Nakada himself, is marked by originality and great artistic creativity.
