Slight variations in size, shape, colour, and surface are inherent to the process. I hope you will embrace these small differences as characteristics that give each piece individuality and character, making them all the more lovable.”

Yuichi Romita is a young Japanese-Italian potter traditionally trained in the Nanban Yakishime style of unglazed wood-fired pottery in Karatsu, Japan. During a period of four years, Yuichi studied as an apprentice under Nakazato Tarouemon, the 14th generation of an unbroken line of family potters dating back to the late 14th century.

Following his stay in Japan, Yuichi moved to Skælskør in the south-western part of Zealand, Denmark, where he has developed his own interpretation of Nanban Yakishime by combining his experiences from his apprenticeship in Karatsu with his position as artist-in-residence at the International Ceramic Reserach Center of Guldagergaard. Yuichi now has his own ceramics studio in Malmö, Sweden, but continues to fire unglazed works at Guldagergaard.

By combining Danish and German clay, Yuichi creates his own unique clay body. Subsequently, he wood-fires his works for up to 36 hours by himself at a relatively low temperature – a highly exhausting and technically demanding process that prevents the firewood ash from melting and thereby keeps it from turning into glaze. Yuichi’s works thus achieve their characteristic soft and matte surface, where the clay body’s mineral composition and flames within the kiln imbue each indiviual piece with unique expressions and surface textures.

Measures | 寸法

Capacity: approx. 175 ml

Dimensions: approx.
