The house is located on top of one of the many smaller mountains that characterize the landscape across the Tsukigase Valley in Nara. Here in the cool mountain air, the tea trees grow slowly and completely without the use of fertilizer (apart from the annual scattering of fallen leaves from nearby forests).

The gentle farming method combined with the pristine natural environment bestow Tsukigase Sencha Yabukita with a uniquely clear profile. The spring tea leaves, which are grown unshaded until harvest in May 2020, offer a very pure minerality and fresh vegetal character in both aroma and on the palate characteristic of Tsukigase Kenko Chaen’s teas. At the same time, the moderate maturation period of +18 months reveals deeper layers of sweet and floral notes that quietly linger in the mouth as a fine aftertaste.

Tsukigase Kenkō Chaen themselves describe their tea as “the unchanging taste of mountain of the past” – and there is indeed something almost timeless about its clear, mineral, and natural expression: Tsukigase Sencha Yabukita is old school sencha.

Tea trees | 茶樹

Cultivar: Yabukita

Age: 25-50 years

Altitude: 260 masl

Shade: none

Fertilisation: none (but dry fallen leaves from surrounding forests are being scattered among the tea trees every year)

Cultivation method: natural farming and certified organic (read more about organic and natural farming here)

Harvest: May 2020

Production method | 製茶方法

Steaming: medium (futsūmushi)

Storage: +18 months

Hi-ire: none

Producer | 生産者

Tsukigase Kenkō Chaen 月ヶ瀬健康茶園 under the direction of Fumiaki Iwata 岩田文明

Origin | 産地

Tsukigase in Nara, Japan

月ヶ瀬 煎茶 やぶきた

2020 vintage Sencha made from pure Yabukita tea leaves grown by natural farming principles without any use of fertilisers or pesticides at Tsukigase Kenkō Chaens jitakumae tea field.

watermelon rind, birch bark, a touch of white flowers

[210,191,105,207
129
0":"post-11929","1":"product","2":"type-product","3":"status-publish","4":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"product_cat-natural-farming","7":"product_cat-tea","8":"product_cat-sencha-tea","9":"product_cat-tsukigase-kenko-chaen-nara","10":"product_tag-sencha-en","12":"first","13":"outofstock","14":"taxable","15":"shipping-taxable","16":"purchasable","17":"product-type-variable","18":"has-default-attributes
["GET
