Yamarin Seicha’s genmaicha is at once very classic in form and with great personality: both tea leaves and roasted brown rice are grown locally and by organic farming methods, and together they brew a warm and soothing, but at the same time clear and refreshing green tea.
The tea leaves are harvested mid-to-late May 2024 from Yabukita and Zairai tea trees in the mountainous landscape surrounding Ōdai village in Mie. The slightly late spring harvest provides the tea with a bright Bancha-like character that brews without any trace of bitterness even at boiling temperature. A characteristic nutty sweetness spreads quickly from the roasted brown rice, but without becoming too dominant for either nose or palate.
Ōdai Genmaicha is as such a highly harmonious representative of its genre. Its combination of mature green tea leaves and roasted brown rice is comfortingly uncomplicated to brew, but they offer together a natural depth of flavour that delightfully demonstrates why genmaicha – when farmed and prepared properly – can be such a popular style of tea in Japan.
