Description | 茶樹

The Benifūki cultivar was originally developed in Kagoshima in the 1960s from a crossbreeding between Benihomare (assamica) and MakuraCd86 (sinensis) with local black tea production in particular in mind. This hybrid legacy provides Benifūki with a full-bodied and aromatically floral character accompanied by a moderate tannic edge reminiscent of certain classic forms of black teas in North Indian style (Benihomare is derived from seeds from Assam, MakuraCd86 from seeds from Darjeeling).

The addition of the Yabukita and Kanayamidori cultivars, which are mainly used in the production of Sencha teas, combined with the skillful processing of Chiran Nōen bestows in turn these fully oxidized tea leaves with a distinct Japanese twist. Warm and mellow, Chiran Kōcha presents a finely balanced expression of contemporary Japanese black tea – also known as wakōcha.
